"Desperta ferro!" As a military corps, the "Almogavers" appear in the conquests of Majorca (1229) and Valencia (1238), although their origins date much further back in time. Al-Mugavar (those causing attacks) was the name given by the Arabs to the group of shepherds who, after having their fields invaded by the Saracens, had to use all their skills during night-time incursions, thus developing techniques for punishment and for maintaining borders.

This is the famous description of an "almogaver" made by Bernat Desclot in Paragraph Two, Chapter 79 of his chronicles (Libre del Rey en Pere d'Aragó e dels seus antecessors passats), where he explained the preparations of the march to Alcoll: " Aquestes gents qui han nom "almogàvers" són unes gents qui no viuen sinó d'armes, e no estan en ciutats ne en viles, sinó en muntanyes e en boscs, e guerregen tots jorns ab sarraïns, e entren una jornada o dues, enlladronint e apresent, e en traen molts sarraïns preses e molt altre haver. |
